About

Vancouver Portable Milling was born out of a passion for wood and a desire to help decrease waste when our urban trees need to be felled. Every day trees are taken down in the greater Vancouver that have the potential to be turned into into valuable lumber for use in furniture, fencing, flooring and building materials.

The process is straight forward. Trees brought down on private properties or business sites are rolled onto the arms of our mill using peavies, they are then hydraulically  lifted onto the mill bed.

The log is cut into the desired dimensions, then the wood is stacked and left to dry (see our post on drying for more info). You are left with your custom milled lumber ready for use in projects.

Buying wood in large slabs or mantle dimensions can be very expensive. Mantles often sell for around 100 dollars per linear foot; however, it’s easy to cut your own slabs or mantles with our mill. Please contact us if you have any questions about the best ways to use the wood from your logs depending on the species, size, density, etc. of the tree.

As we move towards a more sustainable world view, the responsible use of our local resources becomes more and more relevant. It’s nice to know that an old favorite tree that has to come down or trees that need to be cleared for construction can live on and have a second life in furniture or building components.
